The Highwaymen

Florida's ArtistsOne of the Sunshine State's fabulous characteristics and they are characters!

In the 1950s and 1960s a group of African American artists living on Florida's east coast painted quickly realized landscapes on inexpensive building materials, and sold them out of their cars to tourists traveling along the state's eastern highways. This group is called "The Highwaymen" for their novel distribution pattern.

My latest acquisition:

A recent painting by Roy McClendon, Sr., this is a small, but a very colorful sunset rendering. Mr. McClendon is one of the original 26 Highwaymen.

More About the HighwaymenM.A. in 2005

My thesis about the history of the Highwaymen including interviews with their children can be found here. A poster with brief details can be viewed here.

This lucky find several years ago in a second-hand shop is one of my most exciting acquisitions. Now I head for the paintings and framed cast-offs in every thrift shop I encounter - maybe lightening will strike twice!!
